Out of the box, it doesn't have an ad blocker, or a tracker blocker enabled. To use that browser to the fullest, you'll also need to use a Google Account, and thus everything you do in your browser will be collected unless you specifically disable it. You can disable a lot of things in your Google account and the web browser settings, but you'll need to download extensions to block the most invasive trackers and limit fingerprinting. Chrome is also not open source. On Privacy tests.org, we can also see that Chrome has weak fingerprinting resistance. Firefox has a good reputation for privacy, but it's not the best choice either. By default, it collects telemetry data, including how many tabs you have open, how many windows, how many webpages you visit, the number and type of extensions, duration of your browsing sessions, and some technical data on your OS, the version of the browser, the language, and your IP address in their server logs. Firefox can also use this data to recommend extensions to you. In terms of protections, Firefox doesn't block tracking scripts or pixels but it does block social media trackers, cross site cookies, cryptominers, plus all tracking when you're in incognito mode. Firefox is open source, so you can be reasonably sure that it doesn't collect more than what it tells you. If you like Firefox but you don't want the telemetry, and you want improved fingerprinting protection, then there's Librewolf. Brave offers a lot of what you'd be able to do in another browser with extensions, but it does so out of the box. They call them "shields", and they block ads, trackers, fingerprinters, and cross site cookies by default. They also auto redirect GOogle's AMP pages to the "real" website, and they redirect tracking URLs so you're not even visiting the tracking domain at all. The ultimate private browser is probably Tor Browser, but it won't be for everyone. Tor Browser blocks everything that the website might want to learn about you, so there's no tracking at all, and no fingerprinting, but ads aren't blocked. Edge is based on CHromium, the base for CHrome, but they remove everything Google related from it, to mostly replace it with Microsoft related things, like a Microsoft account. Edge, by default, has an opt-out for telemetry. It will block trackers from third party sites, and some ad trackers as well. It also collects "required" diagnostic data that can't opt out of, and this data is used to personalize ads from microsoft. If you use a microsoft account, you'll also give MS a bunch of data in the process, including device information, usage data, browsing activity, bookmarks and more. Opera is yet another chromium based browser, which gets the worst results on privacytests.org. It has a unique fingerprint, and doesn't block tracking scripts, or pixels, it doesn't resist fingerprinting, it doesn't remove tracking parameters, and it also doesn't block the major tracking cookies. It doesn't send "do not track" signals by default either. Their privacy policy also states that they might share personal data with third parties, which can be worrying, as Opera has been bought by a chinese consortium in 2016. Vivaldi is also a chromium based browser. At first start, it will ask you what you want to block. Vivaldi doesn't collect any data, browsing history or anything else, even if you use a Vivaldi account, because everything is encrypted in there.

And today we’re going to talk about an important topic – secure web browsers. So I’ll be talking about the most secure browsers based on the past year, and spoiler alert – the best ones are not your default browser. So, let’s dive in! What does it mean to have a secure web browser? Secure web browsers are ones that don’t track your activity and do their best to avoid vulnerabilities that might allow hackers to exploit loopholes in their coding. Now, mainstream providers like Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome do have built-in security features like download protection, malicious website detection, and automatic “do not track” requests, which make them pretty safe from a security standpoint. But even mainstream browsers that enable you to browse in so-called “private” or windows can still track your activity and send your data to third parties. That’s why your best bet is to choose a secure browser to protect your data. Anyway, let’s get to it. The most secure web browsers in 2023, from worst to best. In last place, we have Google Chrome! Yes, I know, I know, it’s probably the most popular browser on the list. That doesn’t make it the best. While it scores exceptionally high in terms of security, I would hesitate to call Google Chrome a “secure browser.” Here’s why. Coming in at number five, we have our other behemoth browser: Safari. Hear me out: the privacy on Safari is better than Google Chrome. Not much better, but better. Although we know Apple has been accused of data collection in the past, users can now opt into data gathering techniques, which makes Apple’s products a lot more attractive from a privacy standpoint. Still, its creators are part of the NSA’s PRISM program, so take it with a grain of salt. Alright, coming in at number four we have Ungoogled Chromium. While Chromium already scores high in the security department, the ungoogled version takes an extra step, removing background requests to all web services. It also removes pre-made binaries from the source code. Ungoogled Chromium uses HTTPS when possible, disables automatic URL formatting in Omnibox, and disallows pinging an IPv6 address. Now, our number three spot goes to a browser that is mobile-friendly: Brave. Brave is a relatively new Chromium-based private browser, but it already supports all major platforms – something that other browsers on this list still haven’t achieved. Mozilla Firefox is by far the safest mainstream web browser. Although our number one pick is the most battle-ready private browser out of the box. But if you are looking for a hardcore security browser, let me introduce you to the king of private browsers, my number one pick, Tor Browser. So, I always like to use a VPN extension to my browser as an additional layer of protection. This encrypts my data and helps to avoid IP leaks. My personal favorite and the one I use is NordVPN. I talk more about why I like using Nord in my favorite cybersecurity products video which I’ll link to below. And as I mentioned earlier, this includes all of the most essential online security products that the average person would benefit from the most for protecting their privacy and staying safe online. But otherwise, what are your thoughts on secure web browsers? Do you agree with the rankings? Let me know in the comments below! And thanks so much for watching. First, Firefox is adding ads in the browser. Firefox has telemetry enabled out of the box. Firefox pushes other services I have no use for, like Pocket. Firefox doesn't integrate all that well on Linux, and doesn't really look like a native app, unless you use custom userchrome.css, which might be disabled in the future. I like the Proton redesign, but it still doesn't really look like a native application. Firefox's mobile app isn't great on Android. On iOS, it's just a Safari wrapper, but the interface isn't great either, IMO. Now, what am I looking for in a browser, apart from a nice daily companion to share my adventures on the wonderful place that is the internet? I want something that looks at home on my desktop as much as possible, something that looks like it's using GTK or Qt. I don't need thousands of features and extensions: an ad block, syncing with an account to keep my passwords in sync between devices, or compatibility with a password manager, and that's it. I need a mobile client that has reasonable performance and a usable interface. I need decent performance so stuff loads relatively fast and doesn't stutter too much. Anything that performs in the same class as Firefox will work for me. Ram usage is irrelevant, as I only use computers with 16Gb of RAM or more, so my browsing never really poses a threat to that. I want a browser that's private out of the box, without opt-out telemetry, ads in the browser, or data collection. I'd like to avoid chromium based browsers if possible, because Chromium is controlled by Google, however open source it is, and that monopoly kinda scares me. In the end, if it's not possible, I'll live with it. Grumpily, but I'll live with it. That's about it! We might have to compromise on some of these points, so we'll be attributing a score to each browser. Let's look at what's available. In this data visualization I only include desktop web browsers, so no mobile web browsers. So the numbers will be different after 2008, when smartphones took off. Like the previous visualization this one goes back to the first graphical web browser, Mosaic. Before Mosaic most users browsed the web either with a text based web browser such as Lynx or using Nexus which had a graphical interface, which was easier to use. 1993 Mosaic First graphical web browser, Mosaic brought the web to life with inline images and links. 1994 Netscape Navigator Launched at $49 with a 90 day trial 1995 Opera Launched to the public as trialware Internet Explorer That same year IE launched as free add-on to Windows 95 1996 Marc Andreessen co-founded both, Mosaic and Netscape 1997 Netscape held 70% of the market but IE being free and part of Windows was gaining fast. This forced Netscape to became freeware. 1998 Microsoft was taken to court for violating antitrust laws 1999 America Online acquired Netscape for $4.2 billion dollars 2000 Microsoft was found guilty and decided to split IE from Windows 2001 IE was the official winner of the first browser war 2002 Firefox Beta launched, originally called Phoenix, then Firebird 2003 Safari 1.0 released by Apple 2004 Firefox 1.0 finally released to the public 2005 Free Opera Opera browser becomes freeware 2006 IE 7.0 Microsoft reintegrated IE into Windows 2008 Netscape Ends Netscape Navigator is discontinued after version 9 2008 Chrome 1.0 Google releases Chrome 2009 Mobile Web Mobile browsers and apps start reducing desktop use 2010 Firefox 3.6 Firefox introduces Personas theme engine with version 3.6 2011 IE 9 Introduced new interface 2012 Chrome overtakes IE 2013 IE 11 Final version of IE 2014 Opera 19 Introduced Workspaces feature to organize tabs 2015 Edge Microsoft launches Edge to replace IE 2016 Opera 40 Launches with free VPN & battery saver mode 2017 Firefox 55 Included VR capability 2018 Opera 50 Included an anti-Bitcoin mining tool 2019 Firefox 70 Featured Dark Mode & Tracker Blocker 2020 Edge Microsoft introduced Chromium-based Edge and a new logo. 2021 Chrome Google begins development of an alternative to cookies to protect user privacy. Let me show you how you can build your very own "world's most secure" browser. This technology is actually pretty crazing, involving browsers inside docker containers, created out of thin air. These docker containers are then streamed back to your local browser, creating the most secure internet browsing experience possible.
